Week 6 Story: Aladdin and the Magic Lamp

Aladdin was the son of a poor tailor, who worked hard, but did not make much money for his family. No mater how hard the tailor tried, he could not get his son Aladdin to learn any skills. He was an idle boy, and spent his days playing in the street with other idle boys like him. When his father died, his mother begged and weeped for Aladdin to learn some skill to support the family, but her cries did not work. Aladdin was stuck in his ways, and had no skills. One day, Aladdin was met by a strange man, claiming to be his uncle. This newfound uncle was a famous African magician, and claimed to be his late father's brother. Aladdin brought the great news of the new family member to his mother, who thought her late husband's brother was dead. Aladdin and his mother welcomed the uncle into their home, and he was so happy to be surrounded by family again. When the uncle learned that Aladdin had no skills, he offered to front him a shop and fill it with many different things for Alad

Reading Notes: Part B- Aladdin 1

This story is part of the  Arabian Nights unit . Story source:  The Arabian Nights' Entertainments  by Andrew Lang and illustrated by H. J. Ford (1898).  This story is the reason I was drawn to this unit in the first place, so I was really excited for reading B in this chapter.  Aladdin was the son of a poor tailor. Aladdin is described many times in the beginning of this story as "idle". Aladdin would do nothing all day except play in the street with his friends. Aladdin's father, the tailor, sadly died. Aladdins mother was deeply sad, and begged him to stop being so "idle" and essentially become like the new father figure of the family. Despite his mothers begging, Aladdin did not change his idle ways. One normal day, he was playing in the streets as he always does. A man stopped him and asked his age, and if he was the son of Mustapha (which he is). It turns out, this man was his uncle! Also, his new uncle was a famous African magician. He was so excited

Reading Notes: Part A- Arabian Nights: The Sultan and the Fish

The Sultan and the Fish: Story source: The Arabian Nights' Entertainments by Andrew Lang and illustrated by H. J. Ford (1898).  I chose a story from the Arabian Nights Unit. I have always loved Disney, so when I read the part about there being a rendition of Aladin, I was immediately drawn in.  The Sultan and the fisherman go on a fishing trip, in hopes that the Sultan can see some of the magnificent fish that the fisherman has been catching. The Sultan simply said to him, "Throw your nets and catch fish." The fisherman did as he was told, and was hoping for the best, considering there were tons of fish circling around the waters. There were four different kinds of fish swimming in the water- white, red, blue and yellow. The fisherman caught one of each kind, totaling four fish. The fisherman was shocked! He had never caught such different fish, and never such beautiful fish before. He knew he would get a lot of money for this bizarre catch.  The genius said these words:

Reading Notes: Martha and Mary- Part B

http://mythfolklore.blogspot.com/2014/04/bible-women-martha-and-mary.html Mary and Martha: I actually did the stories out of order this week, starting with the actual part B for Tuesday's reading, and going backwards for this one. This reading is much shorter, so I will not have as many notes on this one. Mary and Martha are very prominent characters in the bible, as Mary is the one that weeps next to Jesus tomb (which she later finds out is empty because he has resurrected from the tomb.) In this particular short story, Mary and Martha are meeting Jesus for the first time. This story is from the Gospel of Luke. Mary and Martha are sisters from Bethany, which is why Mary is commonly known as "Mary from Bethany." Mary is also assumed to be Mary Magdalene, who is the woman in the bible that wept next to Jesus' tomb. When Jesus and his disciples came through the village in Bethany, they stopped in Martha's home. Martha gladly took Jesus into her home. During this t

Reading Notes: Martha and Mary, Part A

http://mythfolklore.blogspot.com/2014/04/bible-women-martha-and-mary.html Martha and Mary: Obviously for a person that grew up going to church, and learning the story of Jesus' death and resurrection, these names immediately stood out to me.  After Mary washed Jesus' feet with her hair, and heard his word, she knew he was the lord of all. When their brother Lazarus became sick, Mary and Martha knew that Jesus was the only answer to heal him. When they asked Jesus to heal Lazarus, he obviously loved them, so he went to make a miracle and heal him. Jesus disciples pointed out that it was the middle of the night, and they should not make that journey yet. But, Jesus knowing he needed to save Lazarus, told them that they would make the trek through the night, and wake up Lazarus if need be. I think I would be ok with Jesus waking me up in the middle of the night to perform a miracle and save my life! But, there was a misunderstanding. Jesus, when speaking of "sleep" was

Topic Research: Greek Mythology

I have decided to research Greek Mythology, and begin with stories within that topic. As pointed out to me on the last assignment, this topic has tons and tons of story ideas for me to research and learn about. I also think this topic would be really fun to make into my own stories as well. Story idea 1: Poseidon - Poseidon is Olympian god of the sea, earthquakes, floods, drought and horses. Poseidon also holds his famous trident, or three prong fishing spear. Poseidon is strong and powerful. I would like to do a story depicting him as a princess, instead of his "king" like character. She could be sweet, and dainty instead of powerful and strong. Instead of a trident, the main character could have a magical wand. Story Idea 2: Aergia - This God is described as "the female version of a sloth". This God was lazy, slow and idle. I think a fun story idea would be to depict her as an actual sloth. She could be in the rainforest, climbing slowly through the trees. Story

Week 3 Story: The Creation of Fluffy and Roxy

When God created the heavens and the earth, he realized there was something important missing- inhabitants.  When God thought of all of the different creatures he could create to inhabit his beautiful creation, he decided he needed something lovable, that would appreciate all that he had done. What did he decide on you may ask? First- a fluffy puppy. God created this lovable, cheerful creature from the dirt, and he was very happy with his decision. God named this fluffy puppy what you can imagine: Fluffy. Soon enough, Fluffy became lonely, and bored with no other creatures to play with. God decided to create another being, this time from Fluffy himself. By taking one of sweet Fluffy's ribs, God created Roxy: a loving companion for Fluffy. God decided on the rib, after thoughts of many different options during creation. Why not the mouth? Some might ask. Because if created from the mouth, Roxy would spend her life barking at everything. Why not the paw? Because Roxy would spend her

Reading Notes: Week 3 Biblical

This story explains the mythology behind the creation of man and woman: Adam and Eve. But it takes it one step further- explaining why God made certain decisions during the creation, and the story behind characteristics and personality traits behind both man and woman. For example: God did not want to create Eve from Adam's heart, because it would cause Eve to be filled with envy. He did not want to create her from the hand, or she would steal; not from the ear or she would eavesdrop, etc, so God created Eve from the rib. But, it did not matter which part of the body Eve came from, because Eve brought sin into the world. Therefore, the women that came after her will inherently have envy, lie, eavesdrop, and steal.  Another difference between the creation of man and woman is that man was created from the ground, and woman from bone (essentially from man). This further explains differences between man and woman: the need for perfume, and the difference in voice and tone. Women's

Feedback Thoughts

https://www.kqed.org/mindshift/44408/how-to-get-past-negativity-bias-and-hardwire-positive-experiences I thought it was so interesting to learn that the brain prioritizes negative input over positive input. I have always been a person to be very hard on myself and sometimes get stuck on negative things. It touched on focusing on the bad news over the good news which was also very interesting to me. I am the kind of person when given the choice to hear the good or bad news first, I always pick the bad. I think the HEAL method is a great way to focus on positivity instead of getting stuck on the negative aspect of things. I think this is really important, especially with our generation, and the way the world is, to not get fixed on the negatives. https://ideas.ted.com/why-rejection-hurts-so-much-and-what-to-do-about-it/ Rejection does hurt. Rejection never feels good, and in this day and age, like the article says, rejection is more prevalent than ever. People can hide behind a tiny sc

Topic Brainstorm

I have decided to do a portfolio over a storybook, because I like the idea of writing different things, instead of sticking to one topic. Topic Idea 1: Biblical. I have always loved biblical stories, and would love to create my own. As I was reading through some of the stories in  https://www.diigo.com/profile/lauragibbs/?query=%23Unit%3ABiblical , it really peaked my interest. I have previous knowledge in a lot of biblical stories, but I am really excited to learn about more. I think one story that I would love to make into my own would be Noah's Arc. Topic Idea 2: Classical, (Greek). I love learning about Greek mythology in particular, and was really interested in these stories. I have read some Greek mythology, but would need to do more reading before I write my stories. I think this would be great to create new characters based on Greek Gods and goddesses in my life.  https://sites.google.com/view/modernmyths/home  This was one of the stories I did my first blog post on, and wo

Week 2 Story: Fluffy and his Sticks

Once upon a time, a mother dog had three little puppies. Those puppies names were Princess, Spot, and Fluffy. Princess and Spot had all of the toys they could possibly think of, as well as every treat on the planet to enjoy. They were cute puppies, but they were quite greedy. Fluffy on the other hand, was perfectly content playing with a stick, sock, or leftover water bottle. One day, the mother dog headed to Petsmart to pick up some things for the dogs' upcoming week. She asked each one of her puppies if they needed anything from the store. Princess and Fluffy named all kinds of new toys, treats, and top shelf dog food they wanted their mother to buy. They listed different Petsmart items for hours, while Fluffy sat playing with her stick. She was unbothered by her brother and sister's greediness. After the mother dog had enough of hearing Princess an Spot's demands, she turned to Fluffy. All Fluffy asked for was three new sticks, of course if it wasn't a burden on her

Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

For this reading assignment, I think it's safe to say I saved the best for last! The  Fairy Tales:  Beauty and the Basilisk, was a variation of the famous fairytale, Beauty and the Beast. This is a story of both greed and selflessness, evil and good. The young daughter, the beauty, asks her mother for three roses from the market. After spending a long day at the market, and growing tired on her way home, the old mother gets lost. When she realizes she is lost, she comes across a beautiful bunch of roses growing. At this point, she realizes she forgot the one thing her daughter asked of her: the roses! This is where her greed begins. She begins to steal the roses that are growing and the Basilisk comes out of the castle, angry and ready to punish the old mother. The Basilisk decides the only punishment that will do is to send her daughter to the castle, forever. The mother tries to reason, but the Basilisk threatens to cut her to pieces unless she returns with her daughter. This whe
